History
Bobby Harold along with a friend formed H&W Trucking in November
of 1966. But Bobby’s history in the trucking business began
much earlier. He was born and raised in Ararat, Virginia. He started driving for his father in the early Fifties hauling
produce. Hurricane Hazel hit in 1954, causing considerable
damage to the apple crop. The heavy
wind knocked the apples from the trees. With use of his
father’s 1952 Ford truck, Bobby hauled truckloads of apples to
Georgia. There they were sold at a good price and the profits
were split with his father for the use of the truck. He used his
half of the profits to purchase his father’s truck. This began
his trucking business.
During
the late Fifties and early Sixties, Bobby was able to purchase more
trucks and began delivering chickens from the Dobson Poultry Company
to New Jersey and Pennsylvania and bringing produce back to W.R.
Vernon Produce in Winston-Salem, NC. In 1961, he was able to
purchase his first new truck. Business started to pick up and he
had to purchase more trucks and hire several drivers to keep up.
In November of 1966, along with his friend
Norman Webb they formed H&W Trucking, Inc. They had recently
purchased a truck together and had decided to join together to further
their business. They purchased land in Mount Airy, NC and built
a two bay garage. They continued their runs up the east coast
and sometimes they would go to California. Bobby looked after
the business of lining up loads while Norman took care of the
maintenance.
In 1971, H&W purchased six new Mack
trucks. Bobby and a friend flew to California, coupled together
three trucks each and drove them back to Mount Airy. While in
California, Bobby observed trucks from North Carolina carrying
furniture to the west. In 1972, H&W began hauling furniture
to California. In 1975, Norman decided it was time to retire
and
Bobby purchased his part of the business. He continued to run the
growing business and kept the name of H&W Trucking. Between
1978 and 1979, Bobby, with support from Bassett Furniture, sought and
gained a contract authority with the Interstate Commerce Commission to
transfer furniture to nine western states.
In 1978, Bobby purchased twenty acres of land in the northern part of
Mount Airy. There he built a new terminal with 13,500 sq. ft. of office and warehouse space, and 10,400
sq. ft. of
maintenance space. In 1988, due to growth and expansion in the
LTL furniture business H&W added a 24,000 sq. ft. furniture
distribution warehouse. The business continues in the same location
with Bobby’s children, Gary Harold and Susan Harold Thomas. H&W continues to carry furniture from various manufacturers to the
west coast and bring produce and dry freight back to various
distributors on the east coast including W.R. Vernon Produce in
Winston Salem, NC.
H&W
has expanded to provide
tractors, trailers, and containers for sale, rent, or lease. The company operates
approximately 40 tractors and 100 air-ride trailers in its west coast
operations. In addition, the company has over 700 dry box
trailers and containers in its rental operation. |
